This week we’re starting to see more flowers on some of those crops – potato, cucumbers, squash, tomatilla, tomato, and even the leeks I forgot to pull from last year. We’re already losing a lot of lettuce, peas and broccoli due to the heat, but I have high hopes for the heat loving vegetables this

Keeping bees is one of those endeavors that lives at the intersection of carefully studied research and a little creative ingenuity. Learning the bee swarming signs is important to any bee keeper. For those people who’ve kept bees for life or have a huge operation, bee keeping most likely is simply a matter of intuition and know-how, but for many of us who keep just a few hives, understanding and managing the unique behavior in your bee hive can feel a bit overwhelming.

This week as I went about the garden snapping some photos for this week’s series, I had to stop continuously to wipe the humidity from the lens. It’s already the time year when the harvest is starting to come into the kitchen and we shift from frantically planting to preserving (at least it feels frantic in our home). In our yard, the strawberries are ripe and ready to pick which means it’s time to make jam. Here are some fabulous guides to

I’m Katharina, new to blogging (visit me at thisonegoodlife.blogspot.com), and not even sure I’m a backyard farmer just yet. With a flock of 6-11 chickens around for the past 4 years, and two brand new beehives, along with an expanding vegetable garden and more fruit trees every year, I hope to get there. Inch by inch, row by row… Outside of growing food, our family of five loves making things – sewing, woodworking, repurposing, and we love exploring nature. My greatest motivation for living this one good life is to raise good stewards of this one precious planet.

The garden is growing – it’s really growing! Despite the heat this weekend, we got most of the garden beds weeded and you can see the small, fragile seedlings struggling upward.
