How to Make Homemade Maple Extract

One of my favorite ways to use our maple syrup is to make maple extract. This is an easy way to take the delicious flavor of maple and make it into an easy flavoring to add to baked goods and glazes. It is possible to substitute maple syrup for maple extract, but for baking purposes, I prefer using a pure homemade maple extract.

We’ve been experimenting and making our own extracts for many years and have a few other favorites to share. These are easy to make in advance and last a long time stored in a coold dark place.

What is Maple Extract?

Maple extract is a concentrated flavoring agent derived from the essence of maple trees. It captures the rich, distinct taste of maple syrup in a highly concentrated form, making it a versatile ingredient in cooking, baking, and beverage preparation. Typically made by extracting the natural essences from maple syrup or maple tree bark, this extract adds a depth of flavor reminiscent of the sweet and woody notes characteristic of maple syrup.

Often used to impart a hint of maple flavor to a wide array of dishes such as pancakes, waffles, baked goods, sauces, glazes, and beverages, maple extract offers a convenient way to incorporate the beloved taste of maple into recipes year-round. Whether enhancing the sweetness of desserts or adding a unique twist to savory dishes, maple extract serves as a flavorful and aromatic addition to culinary creations.

Benefits of Making Extract at Home

Making maple extract at home is easy and is a great way to create a strong flavor of maple for use in baking. Maple extract can be hard to find and since it’s so easy to make making your own maple extract gives you complete control over the process.

Ingredients and Equipment

You only need a few ingredients to make

Maple Syrup: You can buy high quality maple syrup, or if you’re lucky enough to have maple trees on your property, make your own syrup. We used our own maple syrup to make this extract.

Vodka: Choose a medium or mild flavored vodka or sum to make your maple extract.

Bottles: you can use any bottle to make your extract. I purchased a set of 4 oz bottles online and prefer clear bottles to clearly see what is happening with the maple and vodka. Depending on the opening you will likely need a funnel to pour in the liquid. Some bottles come with a funnel or you can use one you have at home.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Ratio of Ingredients:
    • The general ratio for making maple extract is 1 part maple syrup to 2 parts alcohol. Adjust the quantities based on how much extract you wish to make.
  2. Combine Maple Syrup and Alcohol:
    • Pour the desired amount of maple syrup into the glass jar.
    • Add double the amount of vodka or rum. Ensure the alcohol fully covers the maple syrup. Secure the lid tightly on the jar and shake well to thoroughly mix the maple syrup and alcohol.
  3. Store in a Cool, Dark Place:
    • Place the jar in a cool, dark location away from direct sunlight. This allows the flavors to infuse properly. Shake the jar gently every few days to help distribute the flavors evenly. Allow the mixture to steep for at least 4-6 weeks. The longer you let it sit the strong the flavor
  4. Store Properly:
    • Store the maple extract in a cool, dark place. Properly stored, homemade maple extract can last for several months to a year. Use your homemade maple extract in various recipes, such as baked goods, desserts, beverages, and savory dishes, to add a delicious maple flavor.

Tips and Troubleshooting

There are very few problems that can go wrong when making maple syrup. The most common problem is the taste is either too mild or too strong. Adjust this by simply adding more maple or alcohol to the extract.
